Making Music!

On October 7th, the students demonstrated their scientific knowledge of sound by making instruments. They each designed, built, and played their own instruments, all while having a lot of fun. It was a great activity!

Revising our Work

To wrap up our language arts unit on fairy tales, the students wrote their very own fairy tales. For this writing assignment, we focused on sentence structure, organization, and word choice. Here, the students are working with partners to revise their fantastic work.

Skip Counting

In math, we are working on skip counting. Laminated hundreds charts and our whiteboard markers help us find patterns.

Global Citizenship Day- June 20, 2011

The students were each assigned a character to play for the entire day. Their nametag provided information about their country, income, and family.

Next, we travelled around to all of the grade 3 teachers, visiting 8 centres!

Discussing child labour in India really affected the students. Here they are trying to stitch soccer balls. It was hard for the children to believe that children their age are doing this 14 hours a day!

Learning how to carry water on our heads

 During lunch, the students were given allowances, according to their character's family's income, to buy lunch with. This activity definitely got the students talking! The children who came from higher income families said they felt guilty, and the students who didn't have enough money for the sausages were devastated. As a class, the students decided they should not complain about their meals ever again.

We ended our day with a presentation from Arianna. Arianna has just returned from volunteering as a mid-wife in third world countries. She had amazing pictures and wonderful stories.

Social Studies: International Aid Organizations

Our last objective in S.S. is discussing what it means to be a global citizen. As a class, we have researched 4 non-profit organizations: Greenpeace, Doctors Without Borders, Free the Children, and World Wildlife Fund. Next, the students made decisions on how they would spend a fictional $100.00 between these organizations.

Science Research Project

The students have been working very hard on their latest science project. They have each chose an animal and independently researched its class, appearance, food, habitat, and adaptations. I've really enjoyed reading their work; I've learned so much already!
